Ontario replaced the old Drive Clean paper process with DriveON, a digital program that covers heavy-duty diesel emissions testing and safety inspections at certified Vehicle Inspection Centres. KG Truck Services is DriveON certified in Mississauga. If your truck needs an emissions test for plate renewal or a change of ownership, you can do it here — and if it fails, the same technicians who tested it can diagnose and repair the aftertreatment instead of sending you across town with a fail printout.
Who needs a heavy-duty emissions test
A DriveON emissions inspection is required for heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles with a registered gross weight over 4,500 kg when the vehicle is at least seven model years old and you are renewing the plate sticker, or when the vehicle is older than the current model year and is being registered to a new owner. Light-duty passenger cars are not in this program. If MTO mailed you a notice, you are in the group that has to test. If you are buying a used tractor, budget for the test before you try to plate it.
The test itself has three pieces. First is a pre-test check: visible smoke, obvious tampering, and whether the truck is in a condition that can be tested honestly. Second is the SAE J1667 snap opacity test — a smoke meter in the exhaust while the engine is snapped to governed speed. Opacity limits tighten on newer model years; an older mechanically injected engine is not judged on the same percentage as a 2010-and-up aftertreatment truck. Third, many 2007 and newer diesels also require an on-board diagnostic (OBD) test. If the malfunction indicator lamp is commanded on, or readiness monitors are not complete, the truck does not pass — even if the stack looks clean.
Fail the test? Repair it in the same shop
Opacity failures usually mean fueling, turbo, or aftertreatment problems: worn injectors, a stuck EGR, a loaded DPF, or a tune that does not belong on a highway tractor. OBD failures are often NOx sensors, DEF system faults, DPF restriction, or incomplete monitors after a recent battery disconnect. Because KG already specializes in electronic diagnostics, we do not treat a fail as a dead end. We scan, explain the cause, quote the repair, and retest when the system is ready. That is faster than a test-only lane that cannot touch the truck.
Tampering is a hard fail and a legal problem. Deleted DPFs, straight pipes, and “tune only” calibrations will not pass DriveON, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you need the truck legal, we can talk about what it takes to restore the emissions system. If you need the truck tested as-is, we will test it as-is and give you the result the program requires.
Pair emissions with a safety inspection
Emissions and safety are separate DriveON products. You can book them apart, or you can stack a DriveON safety inspection on the same visit. Our safety lane is built around turnaround — in by 8, out by 3 on a typical truck that is inspection-ready. If you are already here for opacity and OBD, staying for annual or semi-annual stickers saves a second booking and a second day off the load board.
Bring the vehicle in operating condition, with a charged battery and no active derate if you can help it. If the truck is limp, call first — we may need diagnostics before a valid test is possible.
